RESUMÉ CRITIQUE

Your resumé is the first thing someone sees when considering you for a position; it should be simple, yet leave an impact. If you have never attended a resume building workshop, creating and formatting your resume can feel like an overwhelming task. I have worked with students to modify and re-format their resumes and I would love to help you if you feel out of your depth. Here are four general tips to help you get started:

  1. Formatting is key. Make sure you use the same formula when writing each of your experiences (ie. if you italicize your position title, make sure all your subsequent titles follow the same format).

  2. Brainstorm. What would you want each experience to convey about you? When you summarize each of your experiences into one adjective, try to create a well rounded profile or cater it for the position you are applying for (ie. highlight and emphasize interpersonal skills for jobs related to customer service).

  3. Keep it to one page. Often times, employers have a stack of resumés on their desk. It seems counter-intuitive that having a shorter resumé helps you stand out but I firmly believe in quality, not quantity. Limiting yourself to one page forces you to highlight and choose which experiences greatly contribute to who you are and have more of an impact than a list of everything you have ever done.

  4. Export and send your final resumé as a PDF. If you are sending your resumé to an employer or a principal investigator, I would suggest sending your resumé as a PDF. It adds a nice touch to the overall presentation of your credentials.
